The Arrival by Shaun Tan

This term, Year 6 are basing their writing and art work on the graphic novel by Shaun Tan. The children showed creativity, curiosity and teamwork as they immersed themselves into the story. This included a scavenger hunt, a suitcase conundrum and exploring illustrations!

Year 3 – Book Event with Author

To end Book Week, Year 3 participated in one of Scholastic’s Book Club events with author and illustrator, David O’Connell. Having been introduced to O’Connell’s work earlier in the week, children heard all about how to plan a story, followed along with a draw-along of a treasure map and one of the main characters from his new book, Captain Slugbeard. They also listened to David O’Connell answering questions about his journey to becoming an author and where he gets his inspiration from.

Year 3 Science

This week, Year 3 have been exploring how mirrors work as part of their science topic on light.

They had 2 challenges using mirrors: to crack secret messages written backwards using a mirror and to follow a line on the ground while only looking up!

Year 4 Polar Explorer

Year 4 had a fantastic visit this week from polar explorer Adrian Hall. He shared amazing photos from his expeditions, showed us how to use a compass and organised an exciting map-reading treasure hunt around the playground. The children were full of curiosity and asked lots of thoughtful questions about what life is like as an explorer. We thoroughly enjoyed having him visit our school!

Year 5 Author Visit

As part of world book week, Year 5 were lucky enough to have a visit from author Vanessa Taylor.

They explored her book ‘Baller Boys’ and created a peaceful protest to help save their football grounds.

It was also great to have a surprise visit from Marley the mascot!

Year 2 Art

This week in Art Year 2 have been exploring the work of two different artists and made visual notes in their sketchbooks. First they looked at the work of Marela ZacarĂas and recreated her geometric painting style. Then they looked at the work of Charlie French and painted using his freer and more fluid style of working.

Police Week

In Reception we had our very own crime scene! Someone had come into the classroom and made a huge mess in our home kitchen. PC Ringwood, PC Cross and PC Hann were to hand though and helped the children lead an investigation based on the clues left by the culprit. Children went around the school and asked all adults if they knew anything about the crime. We had lots of fun with the police themed activities of taking fingerprints, making police cars from the junk modelling and measuring footprints.

Year 3 Script Reading

Year 3 have just begun their new writing unit where they are looking at scripts. This week, they have explored what scripts are and how scripts differ from narrative writing. As part of their lessons, they have learned about stage directions and how they are used by actors and actresses to bring scripts to life on stage and screen.

On Thursday, Year 3 learned all about using stage directions to reading with expression. They listened to some examples and then practised using expression when reading to bring scripts to life and add meaning. There are some great voice actors among Year 3!

Year 5 Maths

Year 5 have been exploring fractions and decimals.

Today, they looked at thousandths as decimals and showed fantastic grit and determination. They successfully used place value counters to help them and we are proud of their progress.
