They travelled back in time to 1941 when Great Yarmouth was in the thick of the action as a ‘front line town’. They Discovered how the war affected people on the home front and met an ARP warden, a housewife, a shopkeeper and a Home Guard soldier. We were so impressed by their curiosity!

On Monday, we enjoyed our Viking Day. Our visitors from Jormungand Reenactment gave us lots of information about the Vikings which will be useful for our topic throughout the term. We got to ask lots of questions and handle some Viking artefacts which was great fun.
We also explored Viking shields, practised drawing snakes and serpents and created our own shields incorporating our snakes into our designs.
We can’t wait to learn more!

We are really looking forward to the design and make activities over the next few weeks.
Remembrance Art
Year 6 have produced some beautiful ‘Pointillism’ poppies this week in response to Remembrance. After carefully sketching their poppy outline, children used cotton buds to create the dotted effect. Many people choose to wear a poppy in November for Remembrance Day to show respect for the people who died fighting in the First World War and the conflicts that followed it. But there are other coloured poppies too – purple, black and white – that have different meanings.
The red poppy is the most famous symbol used to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in World War One and conflicts that followed. They say that the red poppy represents remembrance and hope. The purple poppy is often worn to remember animals that have been victims of war. The BlackPoppyRose commemorates the contributions of black, African and Caribbean communities to the war effort – as servicemen and servicewomen, and as civilians. The white poppy is handed out by a charity called Peace Pledge Union, which promotes peace.
We think Year 6 have shown excellent creativity!

Descriptive writing in Year 6
This week, Year 6 have continued exploring emotive character descriptions based on the key text, ‘Rose Blanche’. They have learnt all about figurative language and its effect on the reader. Working as a class, they compiled everyone’s ideas to create a shared write based on a specific point in the text. We think they have demonstrated excellent creativity and teamwork to produce such a powerful image of Rose in the reader’s mind. See if you can identify excellent examples of similes, personification, alliteration and ambitious vocabulary in their paragraph below.
‘Her tear-filled, sorrowful, sapphire-blue eyes were like neverending waterfalls. Broken and fragile, her heart sank down into her malnourished, rumbling stomach which screamed in pain. Rose’s once golden hair was now as dark and gloomy as the forgotten forest. Slow shivers pulsed through her body as she looked over the empty clearing. Her cold, pale hand clutched a wilting blue flower; the only thing alive in this barren wasteland.’

You can see some of the photos below after 7 days and we look forward to finding out the final results in our science lessons this week.
Year 6 Science
Year 6 have been investigating the law of reflection this week. When rays of light reflect, they obey the law of reflection: the angle of incidence always equals the angle of reflection. Children held a mirror on a piece of paper and made a very narrow slit in a piece of card. They dimmed the lights and shone a torch through the slit towards the mirror. On the white paper, they had to look for the incident ray and the reflected ray of light. They had to play around with the angle of the torch and the distance they held it from the mirror. Using a pencil and ruler they drew the incident and reflected rays on the paper. Then, they drew a dashed line perpendicular to the mirror, from the point where the incident and reflected rays met. This is the normal line. We were impressed with the children’s curiosity and teamwork!

We read the story ‘Bobble’ and discussed how Bobble felt landing in a new place . The children were incredibly empathetic and we were really impressed by all their ideas about how to make someone feel welcome when they come to our school for the first time.
Crucial Crew
Year 6 had the chance to learn vital skills through the ‘Crucial Crew’ safety programme during their visit to The Space today. They had workshops from partners including: Norfolk Constabulary, Road Safety, RNLI, St Johns Ambulance and HM Coast Guard. Children found out about staying safe in a fun and interactive way so they feel confident to recognise hazards and know how to safely respond. We were very proud of how engaged children were throughout the sessions.

Y5 Eaton Vale 2023
We had a fun packed few days at Eaton Vale this year. All the children were amazing and gave everything a go even if they were initially weary. We packed so much in that the photos below do not do it justice but hopefully you will get a snapshot of the lasting memories we built.
Y5 Curriculum Day – Earth Day
Today Y5 celebrated Earth Day. We were tasked to look at the issue of ‘littering’ and how this impacted on the Earth. We decided to go on a litter pick around the school grounds. Due to the amount of litter found the children felt compelled to do more so they decided to write letters to their local MP raising this issue within their community. In the afternoon Y5 met up with their Y2 buddies class and helped them complete their ‘No – Mow May’ posters. Calling upon the school and all garden owners and green space managers not to mow during May – liberating their lawns and providing a space for nature.
Year 2 – Fire Service Visit
Year 2 had a very exciting end to the week meeting some local fire fighters from the North Earlham crew. The children learnt all about the fire engine, listened carefully as the crew explained how they use the different equipment and asked some excellent questions. They also got to see the crew use one of their ladders and were amazed at how high it could go!

It was Anti-Bullying Day in school. In year 1 we read a story called Mixed by Aree Chung. It inspired us to create our own art around the story. We drew our own cities and used finger paint to create the people. The children loved mixing the paint to create as many different colours as they could for their towns. They then turned these finger prints into people.
We also had a circle time about what makes a good friend. We shared our own ideas with each other about the things we can do to be a good friend.
