Year 6 designed their own board game- the rules, the board, the pieces, and the whole adventure players go on. They had to think about who would play their game and what would make it fun for them. Then they had to sketch different layouts, try out rule ideas, and choose a theme.
Finally, in groups they tested the game, noticing what worked and what didn’t, and use evaluation skills to improve it.
Every single child in Year 6 has worked tirelessly during their SATs, this week. They came in everyday with smiles on their faces (perhaps smelling the breakfast!) ready to take on the challenge. It was a pleasure to see everyone working hard, and feeling so confident in themselves after making so much progress from the start of the year. Doing every past paper, attending booster groups and constantly pushing to get better.
It was very reassuring to hear many of them saying it was ‘easy’ as they left, a testament to how well prepared they were.
We’re so proud of all your efforts, as you should you, and hope you enjoyed the pizza!
Congratulations, Year 6⭐
We shared this poem with our Year 6s in Year Group assembly- a good reminder! SATs don’t measure sports, SATs don’t measure art,
SATs don’t measure music, or the kindness in your heart.
SATs don’t see your beauty, SATs don’t know your worth,
SATs don’t see the reasons you were put upon this earth.
SATs don’t see your magic, how you make others smile,
SATs don’t time how quickly you can run a mile.
SATs don’t hear your laughter, or see you’ve come this far,
SATs are just a tiny glimpse of who you really are.
So sitting at your table, with a pencil and your test,
Remember SATs aren’t who you are, remember you’re the best!
Year 6 explored the work of Gustav Klimt, focusing on his use of pattern, colour and decorative detail. They created their own artwork inspired by his style, incorporating bold shapes, gold tones, and intricate designs. Through this project, pupils developed their creativity and gained an understanding of how artists express ideas through texture and symbolism.
Year 6 celebrated Science Week by completing a range of tasks which required them to utilise their teamwork skills.
We know that scientific discoveries are never just one person, but instead a group of people who all bring a different set of skills and ideas.
Year 6 were challenged to write their names and draw a picture with a pen that they could only control using pegs. A fantastic afternoon, well done Year 6!
Golden Eagles went one step further and decided to try the challenge blindfolded!
This term, Year 6 are basing their writing and art work on the graphic novel by Shaun Tan. The children showed creativity, curiosity and teamwork as they immersed themselves into the story. This included a scavenger hunt, a suitcase conundrum and exploring illustrations!
Year 6 welcomed visitors from a local NHS Mental Health team who encouraged us to think about our emotions and personal coping strategies. Although all of the Year 6’s are showing brilliant resilience and rising to the challenges of the year, it was excellent to reflect on our ‘strategies toolkit’ for times when we feel overwhelmed, confused or nervous.
Each class had a fantastic time and came away feeling positive and well-equipped!
Block printing with string is an easy, textured printmaking technique where string is glued onto a block in a specific pattern, to act as a raised, inked surface. The string-covered block is inked with paint and stamped onto paper to create a unique design. Year 6 used their creativity and challenged themselves to incorporate some traditional Maya designs into their block to reflect the ancient civilisation’s culture.
We started by designing a range of prints that we could use and then chose a specific design. The children considered the integrity of the pattern and how difficult it might be to make.
Then, the children chose paint and complementing colours to print their block!
Learning about the different inventions of the Ancient Maya civilisation, Year 6 created a visual map filled with lots of important information. We showed curiosity and concentration to find out information about the invention of spicy chocohlaa, their number and letter system and their famous calendar. All of this information will then be used when we begin writing a non-chronological report!
Thank you to the parents who dropped into school on Friday morning to share a reading book with our pupils. We heard some interesting conversations: children speaking about the books they love, retelling stories from picture books and some of our EAL pupils translating stories into their first language. It’s excellent to see Year 6 finding a pleasure in reading!
Year 6 had a fantastic trip out to Great Yarmouth to visit the Time and Tide Museum. We travelled back to 1941 when Great Yarmouth was in the thick of the action as a ‘front line town’. Year 6 discovered how the war affected people on the home front and met an ARP warden, housewife, shopkeeper and Home Guard soldier. We explored how to stay safe in an air raid and took cover in a Morrison shelter. Children in the year group tried on gas masks, counted rations in the wartime shop and learned how to ‘make-do and mend’.
At school, the children finished off their Second World War unit by creating a double page spread on all of the information that they have learnt. A brilliant term of learning, completed with some excellent presentation!
