This week we have been learning more about 2D and 3D shapes. We learnt what the difference was and found out the shapes names. We talked about the different properties of shapes. We now know what sides, corners and faces are.

Year 3 were privileged to take part in one of Scholastic Schools Live ‘Festive Doodling’ lesson with Liz Pichon, author of the Tom Gates books.

They enjoyed hearing about Liz’s new book ‘Tom Gates: Happy to Help’ and learnt how to doodle in her signature style!
We looked at advantages and disadvantages of living in a city.

In Year 6 this week we have started our Design and Technology unit for this term. In this unit on ‘Mechanisms’, we have started by learning about levers and fulcrums. We learned that Archimedes discovered this concept that we can adjust how much weight we can lift by pivoting on a fulcrum. We learned how changing the distance of the ‘effort arm’ from the fulcrum can make a big difference to the weight we can lift.

During the lesson, we talked about the examples of levers we can see in our everyday lives; seesaws, nutcrackers, hammers, bottle opener and balancing scales. Using a fulcrum doesn’t make the item lighter, it just changes how we can apply pressure to lift the weight. Maybe you can have a go at home building your own lever systems. Send some photos if you make anything!

This half term Year 2 have been using the book ‘I Want My Hat Back’ to inspire their English work. They have used drama to act in the role of the bear with the missing hat and understand how the bear would have felt. They have also used their descriptive writing to try to help the bear find his hat.
After reading the book, the children were inspired to make their own hats but unfortunately a terrible crime occurred and one of the hats went missing! Year 2 conducted their own investigation, using their inference, prediction and questioning skills to identify the culprit. Luckily the children solved the crime and were able to get the missing hat back.
Finally, the children wrote crime scene reports for Mr Cross to inform him of what had happened.

This afternoon Year 2 took part in a live lesson with the authors and illustrators Jon Klassen and Mac Barnett. They learnt about being an author and listened to Mac Barnett read their new book ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. The children were also shown by Jon Klassen how to draw the characters from the story.

Last week, Year 3 started their topic of measurement in maths. They learnt how to measure in mm, cm and m by measuring lines on the playground.

Back in the classroom, the children then matched their measurements to the real size of different animals, using the books ‘Actual Size’ and ‘Prehistoric Actual Size’ by Steve Jenkins.

We looked at permission in RSE today. We discussed different scenarios and explored why it is important to ask for permission.

Well done to the Y3/4 children who attended the World Cup themed football event today at the Nest.

It turned out it was a Penguin. It was missing and had got lost at our school so, the year 1 children found out about Penguins. What they are like, their special features and where they live. They created missing posters to help find the Penguin.
