Year 1 Maths – Measure

Children in year 1 have been exploring measure this half term. They compared length and height, before measuring with cubes. They then measured in centimetres, carefully using a ruler. Some children even measured the length of the carpet! They have also explored mass using balance scales. They used the language of “heavier than” and “lighter than” to compare different objects. They then used their reasoning skills to try to work out the mass of new objects based on the mass of other objects.

Year 1 – Science Curriculum Day

Year 1 had a great time on Friday, taking part in three experiements as part of our Science curriculum day. After our Mad Science assembly, we were all thinking like scientist and ready to experiment!

Experiement 1 – Teamwork!

Children were challenged to copy a drawing in teams of four each holding a peg attached to the same pen! Children were not allowed to talk for the first experiment. The results were ‘interesting’! The next time, children were allowed to talk and their end result was much improved. Children agreed that talking and listening to each other definitely helped!

Experiment 2 – Crafty Rafts!

Children were given an A4 sheet of paper and challenged to build a raft. The raft that held the most marbles would be the winner. Children designed their rafts, built them and then tested them. The winning design hed a whopping 63 marbles before sinking! A flat sheet of paper held 59..

Experiment 3 – Solivng a crime!

During lunch there was a theft from the classrooms! Clues left behind included a ransom note and four different black pens used by four suspects. Children solved the crime by testing the inks on cartridge paper and discovering which pen had been used to write the ransom note.

A fun-filled day spent thinking as scientists!

Year 1 DT – Fruit kebabs

As part of our Design Technology lessons, children have been learning about the design cycle – Design, Create, Evaluate. Alongside this in Geography, we have been thinking about food and where it comes from. To bring this learning together, we decided to make our own fruit kebabs. Children designed their fruit kebabs, then made them in the Cookery Room. They then got to eat their fruit kebabs with their friends before writing about what they liked about them, and what they would do differently another time. The group verdict was “Yummy!”. Next week, we will be looking at where the food we used in the fruit kebabs was grown.

Y1 Art – Printing plates

As part of our Art learning, we designed our own priting plates. Children then made their own printing plates using foamex and also mixed their own colours . Once the paint had dried, we held an ‘art exhibition’ to showcase their work. Children were really respectful of each other’s work and made kind compliments. 🙂

Y1 go exploring at Thrigby Hall!

Children had a fantastic day at Thrigby Hall this week. They enjoyed watching the animals ‘in action’ at Thrigby – especially the gibbons swinging around their area. They were keen explrorers, even able to spot Raja the tiger using his stripes to hide in the bamboo. As scientists, they were able to use their science learning to help them identify if animals were Birds, Mammals, Fish, Reptiles or Amphibians. They met Scott, Zoological Director, who explained about the different animals at Thrigby and how Raja had been transported to the zoo. A fantastic day of fun learning!

Year 1 writing

We are so proud of the year 1 children this week. Not only have they shown great confidence with their wonderful Christmas performance, but they have also been working hard on their writing. They have been writing the story of ‘Lost and Found’. This is the longest piece of writing they have done so far and they have amazed us with their independence and creativity. Well done!

Year 1 – Comparing Cold Climates

In year 1, children have been learning about cold climates. They have learned about Antarctica in the South Pole and how penguins have adapted to live in the Antarctic conditions. They then compared this to the Sahara desert and looked at how camels have adapted to live in the hot desert. By using venn diagrams, they were able to think about what was the same, and what was different between these cold and hot climates. Finally, they learned about how the Arctic is an ocean at the North Pole which freezes over. Alongside their learning of cold climates, they made moveable penguins in DT and painted digital penguins in IT.

Have you seen this penguin?

On Tuesday, Year 1 had an intruder in their classrooms! We saw clues in the class such as ice, frozen fish and webbed foot prints. After checking the CCTV, it became clear that the culprit was a penguin.

Year 1 tried to find the penguin by making some wanted posters. They wrote some fantastic descriptions of the penguin.

Year 1 Toy Museum

This week, Year 1 had fun visiting the toy museum! They got the coach to Strangers’ Hall and met the Toy Maker who showed them some amazing old toys. The children sorted, made and tested different toys. They given got a chance to explore the toy room and look at toys that were over 100 years old! What a fantastic trip.

Year 1 Autumn Walk

Year 1 had fun on their autumn walk today. They explored the outdoor classroom and went on a hunt for signs of autumn. The children found different coloured leaves, acorns and even some mushrooms! We all had a photo by a tree with yellow leaves and we will check back later in the year to see if the leaves have changed.
