Dancing Raisins Y5

Last week in science we were continuing to explore the properties of materials. We carried out the ‘dancing raisin’ experiment and had great fun watching them! We had to make some predictions, observe closely and consider the reasons for the movement using scientific vocabulary

Y5 Democracy

During our first full week back in school, year 5 have been campaigning for their school council representatives. We learned about democracy and how we keep things fair. The children worked together on their campaigns and made compelling speeches. Well done to all our school councilors who were elected on polling day!

Y5 RHE

This week, we have been exploring sun safety. In RHE, we have been learning about how to keep safe in the sun and the effects of UV rays. In science, we learnt about processes involved with testing sunscreen and used UV beads to test the effectiveness of sunscreens with different factors. It helped us to understand the importance of wearing sun cream.

Y5 BSL Live Lesson

Year 5 enjoyed joining in with a live BSL lesson today. We learnt how to sign our names, the signs for greetings, animals and family members.

Outdoor Art y5

Last week in year 5, we started to learn about cityscapes and landscapes. We started by learning about two artists: Vanessa Gardiner and Phil Dean, the Shoreditch sketcher. This week, we were inspired by their work to go outside and create our own multi-media cityscapes of Queen’s Hill.

Y5 Geography visitor

This week Mr Marsh and Dr Richardson came to talk to us about flood defences as part of our geography topic. We have been learning about rivers and this was the perfect end to our topic. We got to experiment with different types of flood defences and even got to build some of our own. A huge thank you to them for giving up their time to share their important work with us.

Y5 Mandarin

This week, in Mandarin, the children had a tasting session and had a go at using chopsticks, to celebrate the Chinese New Year!

Y5 Rivers

We launched our ‘What is a River?’ topic in Geography this week by making our very own rivers! We are looking forward to exploring the different parts of a river and exploring river wildlife over the next weeks.

Y5 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Some of  us in Year 5 had the opportunity to visit OVA to watch the dress rehearsal for their Christmas production of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!’. We all were wowed by the amazing acting and dancing skills of the cast and were astounded when the car actually flew! When we got back to school, we sang our own rendition of the song to the office staff! Thank you to OVA for inviting us.
