Welcome to Year 6

Overview

In Year 6 there are three classes. We start the morning with a ‘Daily Mile’ to get the children warmed up and ready for learning. The pupils’ timetable is structured for the morning into spellings, maths, following White Rose planning; and English, which is based on fiction and non-fiction texts linked to our topic themes. Reading Master lessons are based around a variety of genres where we encourage children to explore vocabulary, use inference, make predictions, explain, develop retrieval skills and summarise events. The wider curriculum subjects are taught through a whole school creative and connective approach.

Black Heroes of Mathematics

We had the privilege of joining an online conference with the London Mathematics Society to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the first Black person in the world to get a PhD in mathematics. Dr Elbert Cox, an African-American, received his PhD on the 26th September 1925 from Cornell University. We were joined by Dr Cox's grandson who shared his grandfather's story and his own journey to working as a NASA scientist. We looked at the concept of binary numbers and played an exciting game to show the unpredictability of using zeros and ones!

Rose Blanche Descriptive Writing

Year 6 have worked hard to write descriptively about the final scene of Rose Blanche. Using a range of figurative language features, Year 6 focused on creating a strong picture in the reader's mind and provoke strong emotions.

Writing Descriptively: Editing

Year 6 have started their second unit of work, writing descriptively about settings and characters. At the end of their drafting sessions, Year 6 have shown teamwork and collaboration to improve and redraft sections of their work using their green pens. Now, their writing reads better and uses more features of the success criteria. Great skills that are starting to be improved!

Two-week art project: self-portrait

Year 6 have used the work of Mike Barrett to inspire their own pieces of artwork. The children created a self portrait which incorporates colours they feel reflect their personality and character. Everyone has shown brilliant grit and determination and creativity during this project!

A fantastic start for Y6!

A warm welcome to all- children and parents 😊 We have had an excellent start to the year, starting with nominating and democratically voting for our class representatives for School Council. The children were creative when writing their speeches and showed excellent teamwork when preparing. It has been great to see everyone engaging in the process!

Historical Enquiry

Year 6 went on a hunt around the classroom for information about the Norwich Strangers! Life changed a lot for the Strangers after they arrived in Norwich. They were allowed to worship in their own language and follow their religious traditions, but some local people did not welcome them at first. Over time, many Stranger families began to settle in, with children attending local schools and learning English. Although there were tensions over work and trade, the two communities gradually began to mix, with some Strangers marrying locals and joining in city life. We looked at secondary sources and considered whether it showed the Strangers were integrating into Norwich society or maintaining their own identity.

Art Work Based on Skellig

Some of these look like a scary dream! Our Year 6's have used the language choices of David Almond to predict how one of the main characters, Skellig, looked. There was lots of creativity used to create these haunting pieces of artwork!

The Norwich Strangers

Year 6 were very lucky to have a visit from Karen and Clair who work at the Norfolk Record Office to deliver activities on our history unit: The Norwich Strangers. They helped Y6 to recap their understanding of who the Norwich Strangers were, where they came from and why they came to Norwich. Everyone showed curiosity, teamwork, and concentration to have a fantastic workshop; there was even period dress-up involved!

Experimenting With Blending

Year 6 have started their new art topic, inspired by the abstract style of Patrick Heron. This week, we experimented blending colours together in order to create a sunset. Everyone showed creativity and teamwork; a great start!
