Overview
In Year 1 children learn through whole class carpet sessions, table work, group work and continuous provision. They are given a wide range of opportunities to discover and create. Mornings can include phonics, where we follow the Read Write Inc programme, Maths and English lessons as well as opportunities for independent learning. In the afternoons the wider curriculum subjects are taught through a connective approach, with more time to explore through provision. As the year progresses children will move to a more formal approach to lessons, helping them to get ready for Year 2.

Year 1 Home Learning Platform:
In Year 1 we use the Tapestry learning platform. Here you will be updated on events, notices and home learning tasks. We will also share some of the children's practical learning and the children themselves will use Tapestry to share their learning during provision.

Y1 – Patterns
In Year 1 we have been learning about repeating patterns. We started with shape patterns and then moved onto making patterns with a range of materials. The children enjoyed moving around the classroom and experimenting with different patterns.
Y1 – Sketchbooks
This week Year 1 drew in their sketchbooks for the first time. They were encouraged to put themselves on the page. Children used pens, pencils and crayons to draw things that matter to them and decorate it in a way that made it completely theirs. Each one was completely unique and we think it'll be a great memory for them to look back on, we were so impressed by their creativity.
Y1 – Stranger’s Hall
Year 1 really enjoyed their trip to Stranger's Hall. They played with toys, sorted toys and even made their own toy!
Keeping our school tidy
Year 1 have been helping to keep our school tidy during busy time. Some children chose to use litter pickers to pick up any rubbish that they saw.
Year 1 Spiral Art
In Year 1, we have been learning about spiral art. We were inspired by spirals in nature and created our own spiral art! We then hosted an art gallery where we displayed our work and discussed each other's final piece.
A great start to Year 1
The children have settled well into Year 1. They have enjoyed carrying out their own projects and exploring their new classroom and resources during busy times. They are starting to get used to some new routines and we are very proud of them.
Polling Day: School Council
Today, classes visited polling stations 🗳️ to elect their new school council members. we have been learning all about democracy and fairness.Well done to our new school council members for 24/25! 🎉 oppo_32
Y1 – Jack and the Bean’s Talk
Year 1 had a visit from the Garlic Theatre Company for a production of Jack and the Bean's Talk. The children also got the opportunity to see the puppets and find out how it all works. They were incredibly inspired and we can't wait to see how amazing their own stories are when they write them in a few weeks.
Y1 – Day of Welcome
As part of our curriculum day Year 1 have talked about what it would be like to have to move to a new school or a new place. We read the story 'Bobble' and discussed how Bobble felt landing in a new place . The children were incredibly empathetic and we were really impressed by all their ideas about how to make someone feel welcome when they come to our school for the first time.
The mystery in year 1
Last week the children came into school and a beanstalk had grown in each of the classrooms! The children think that the beanstalk grew from some magic beans that Mr Cross gave us. The children have worked hard to describe the beanstalk and produced some wonderful descriptive writing!
